Sierra Nevada and the Alpujarras

The Sierra Nevada is not only the second highest mountain chain but also has the richest mountain flora of Europe. The highest peaks are Pico Valeta (3398 m) and the Mulhacen (3482 m). These peaks are recognizable for the fact that most of the year snow is to be found on top of them.

The Sierra Nevada national park has a flora consisting of more than 2100 species. Also, there are more than 60 species (predatory) birds and 120 species of butterflies.

The Alpujarras are located on the southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada and is a spectacularly beautiful area. The mountainous region with picturesque white villages signs the setting of this mountain landscape. The Alpujarras is within the National Park of Sierra Nevada and is a major pedestrian destination.

A trip through the Alpujarras show numerous small villages, including:

• Orgiva: the largest town of the Alpujarras, it has a baroque church in the main street and a busy market on Thursday.

• Capileira: lies at an altitude of 1436 m and is a typical Moorish town, which in its whole has been declared monument.

• Bubión: one of the children of the village is up in the Tibetan monastery to become the new Dalai Lama.

• Pampaneira: narrow streets and steep steps. It is a small village, but is very popular in the summer as a base for climbing in the Sierra Nevada.

• Trevélez: village known for its raw ham, that is dried in the mountain air.

• Lanjarón: This village is a real spa. From June to October, flows of people come to Lanjarón to drink beneficial water.
